  Cross-Disciplinary English

Due to the growing number of Higher Education institutions where English is taught as a cross-disciplinary subject, the development of specific curricula that can be used by the concerned teachers is more than ever urgent.
Differences between various disciplines highlight the need for discipline-specific ESP courses.

That's why the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technology with the collaboration of the Virtual University of Tunis has nominated 5 teams of professionals to work on curriculum design.
The teams have divided the Cross-Disciplinary English syllabus into 5 categories in order to cover most specialties:

  1. English for Science and Technology.

  2. English for Medical Studies.

  3. English for Law and Politics.

  4. English for Business Studies.

  5. English for Humanities.

Each category has sub-categories. For instance, Social Studies, Arts and Languages fit under English for Humanities.

By the end of this course, students will acquire the required skills appropriate for each field, be familiarized with typifying grammatical features of the discourse of science, develop awareness of grammatical categories appropriate for register and produce appropriate written and oral texts.

The 5-semester ESP program is meant to be taught online. The rationale behind this choice is to give students the opportunity to rely on themselves with no pressure from teachers or classmates, to benefit from working "anywhere, any time" at their own pace. Nevertheless, online tutors will give them all the assistance and advice needed through the use of specific online communication tools.
