The Virtual University of Tunis (UVT), a public institution created in January 2002, has as a principal mission the development of courses and programs of university education on line for Tunisian universities.
By definition a multi-disciplines university, UVT’s mission is to provide its students with training for a profession adapted to the needs of the scientific, socio-economic environment as well as to the national and international needs.
At present, the UVT offers 8 educational programs 4 of which are professional mastères (in Applied Perspective and Neuro-Radiology), training in view of licences and cross-cutting training (C2i, English, Entrepreneurial Culture, Human Rights). All of the types of training provided by UVT are accredited by the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Learning, Scientific Research and Technology.
Today, UVT caters to a diversified public, especially composed of students and employees, enrolled to follow initial or continuous training.
UVT is entrusted with the coordination of the different activities related to training in-absentia with the other universities within the framework of an integrated mechanism which unifies the efforts and means of all parties in a way that on-line teaching could be an adjunct to higher learning in attendance.
In this manner, UVT provides the other universities with:
the training of trainers in the use of ICTs, digital pedagogy and scenarization,
Interactive multimedia digital teaching units with auto evaluation along with on-line teaching spaces provided on the Moodle platform, centers of access and centers for tele-conferencing and laboratories for digital production,
The major goal of the Virtual University of Tunis is to offer quality on-linetraining using teaching methods pedagogically well adapted to the new technologies and to on-line learning.
UVT’s objective is also to offer a wide range of quality courses and curricula to meet the expectations of Tunisian universities:
Reinforce the production of innovating and quality pedagogic resources and make them available to a wide audience of educators and learners;
Improve the skills and competence of educators, students and the actors concerned by the use of EICTs in training;
Support Tunisian university establishments in the use of technologies and virtual pedagogic resources;
Diversify and multiply training offerings, provide on-line quality training in view of diplomas and innovations, give preference to training in view of employment;
Decree number 112-02 of January 28, 2002 creating the Virtual University of Tunis Article One: hereby a university named the ”Virtual University of Tunis” is created. This university is affiliated to the Ministry of Higher Learning.
Article Two: The Minister of Higher Learning and the Minister of Finances are respectively entrusted each to execute the present decree which shall be published in the Official Journal of the Tunisian Republic.
Decree number 1936-06 of July 10, 2006 (specifying UVT’s mission, the training system and its relation with the other universities)
Decision by the Minister of Higher Learning, Scientific Research and Technology of July 13, 2007, specifying the requirements for obtaining the Computer and Internet Certificate granted by the Virtual University of Tunis.
More than 2 990 educators and executives participated in seminars sensitizing days on virtual teaching and UVT’ s activities; More than 2 928 educators trained in interactive multimedia writing, digital pedagogy and the use of the platform and tutoring ; More than 40 videoconferences were carried out with Tunisian and foreign universities.
- More than 20 000 students follow transversal training in Entrepreneurship; - More than 680 ISET students follow partial on-line training; - More than 12 000 regular students attend 182 courses via the platform and are tutored by 160 educators; - More than 315 000 and 3 600 educators areenrolled in RPL and have free-of-charge access on-line to more than 320 courses.
- More than 67 448 regular students attend the C2i training (Computer and Internet Certificate) - 38 training sessions on the C2i pedagogic contents were organized for the benefit of 722 educators; - 7 C2i tutoring training sessions were organized for the benefit of 112 educators; - 51 certification sessions were organized for correspondents, the pedagogic teams and the students; - 395 educators and students received C2i certificates
- 132 access centers equipped and disposing of an Internet connection are distributed over the Tunisian university establishments. Any educator or student enrolled in one of them may access free of charge; - 14 videoconferencing centers were equipped and installed in the institutions of higher learning; - 14 laboratories of digital production, - 01 filming and editing studio.
1800 courses of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been made available for the VUT. A mirror site grouping all of these courses is housed by the VUT following the signing of a convention by the two institutions.
