The Virtual University of Tunis: Mission and Vision PDF Print E-mail
The Virtual University of Tunis was founded in 2002 to support higher education development’s efforts by providing free quality education and training to students and teachers in Tunisian universities and institutions of higher education. It was initially established to spread distance-education and foster ICT integration in higher education sector.


In response to urgent issues and particularly to address the challenge of the growing number of students in higher education, VUT is gradually spreading e-learning in priority disciplines. It is committed to improving the quality of education through the use of interactive and innovative tools, encouraging and supporting online curriculum design for higher education training.


VUT is Tunisia’s only university dedicated to distance learning; it currently offers interactive tutored courses, training, and instructional design. It proposes more than 500 modules, and equally aims at widening access to technology and promoting lifelong learning and continuing education through cost-effective and engaging online career development tools for professionals. It awards diplomas and certificates, helps upgrading skills and competences to meet the growing demands from students, administrations and employers in today’s knowledge society.


Tunisia’s virtual university has invested in a state of the art infrastructure in order to work on promoting online learning. It has 234 well-equipped access centers in various universities throughout the country. They are mainly used to support the use of online courses designed by VUT pedagogic teams and hosted in the Virtual Learning Environment (http://ent.rnu.tn).
It also strongly encourages collaboration and partnership in higher education at institutional regional and international levels. In this respect, 39 videoconferencing centres are used for exchange of educational material and academic collaboration. In the same way, 14 laboratories and a film studio for digital production have been set up to assist university professors design their courses online and benefit from the necessary technology to convert their in-class material to a digital content. To achieve its mission of disseminating knowledge, Tunisia’s virtual university is constantly developing and implementing new programmes and innovative learning tools.
